Today I travel to San Francisco to attend the national conference CASE/NAIS. I am currently on Delta flight 1151 from Atlanta to San Francisco. I know for many that being connected to the internet at 37,000 ft is just no big deal, but stop for a second and think about it. I have tweeted, messaged my wife on facebook and had a great exchange with a buddy in British Columbia about a career change. While we struggle with our global economy has the environment ever been more ripe with possibility. This is an extraordinary time. Are you making the most of it? I hope so!!

If you want a lesson in how to get social media and communications right get yourself to Chuck's Corner at Proctor Academy's website. His recent post captured the community's emotion regarding a real tragedy, but the lesson isn't that. Read the piece and feel how it captures you with emotion right away, then notice how he switches to recognizing the employees who do the less noticed jobs on campus everyday. This is the work of a master communicator and story teller. Please dismiss most of the experts pushing their wisdom daily and read the work of a practicing artist.

The super-rich opened their wallets wider last year, when the number of $1 million-plus donations nationwide nearly doubled over 2010.

Gifts of $1 million and more to nonprofits jumped from $3.6 billion in 2010 to $5.4 billion last year, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which compiled the data.

In another sign that mega-philanthropy is recovering from the economic downturn, the chronicle found that the number of people making donations of more than $100 million also rose. Philanthropists in that rarefied world climbed from six in 2010 to 10 in 2011.

The year's biggest winner? The new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, founded by Alice Walton, daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton and one of the world's richest women. It received an $800 million endowment from -- no surprise -- the Walton Family Foundation.

The museum of American art, which opened in November, is near Wal-Mart's home in Bentonville, Ark.

The second-largest donation, $350 million, went to Cornell University in New York to build a technology campus. The donor was Charles Feeney, co-founder of the Duty Free Shoppers Group.

A $265 million pledge to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh took third place. It was made by William Dietrich, then chairman of Dietrich Industries, who died a month after making the donation.

Museums and universities were the lucky recipients of the 10 biggest blockbuster gifts. The exception was the Mayo Clinic, which received a $100 million pledge from longtime Mayo patient and philanthropist Richard Jacobson, founder of Des Moines-based Jacobson Companies.

Jacobson donated $100 million to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to establish innovative cancer-fighting centers there and in Phoenix.

I was reading a discussion on LinkedIn today about adding a fee to gifts for operations. I wonder how the super philanthropists would feel about their point person switching gears to say " Thanks for the 800,000,000 but we would like to take part of that and fund something that is important to us" What are we thinking????

In a few weeks I will be atending the CASE/NAIS conference in San Francisco. I am looking forward to attending the conference and seeing old friends but really intrigued about visiting the offices of Posterous. Read the funniest piece on moves management this morning. The diagram below was a take away on how to build a quality relationship with donors. However the article never once mentioned or suggested a metric that would measure the retention or growth of a single relationship. Stayed tuned for a new metrics model at CASE/NAIS in February. This new metric model will quantify the growth and qualtiy of the donor relationships that matter most. It is time to measure what matters most for nonprofits to be successful.
