Building A New Site…Down In Jungleland
I am currently in the process of building a new site (pardon the appearance). Started a little brainstorming while doing the dishes and listening to some Bruce. When this song started playing I immediately felt myself in a time machine back to 1975, the year I graduated from high school. Do yourself a favor and stop, play this tune and close your eyes. Let it paint a picture in your mind of different time. For me it had me realize the power of life moments, listening I revisited the history of my life between then and now. Building a history on this new site of Proctor, Wow, Summer Institutes, singing on Bourbon St, Train travel around the country along with highlighting all the incredible people I have met on this journey and what they have taught me while on my way down in Jungleland!
The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine
Over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance
And disappear down Flamingo Lane
Well the Maximum Lawmen run down Flamingo
Chasing the Rat and the barefoot girl
And the kids round here look just like shadows
Always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails
Tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand
Down in Jungleland
The midnight gang’s assembled
And picked a rendezvous for the night
They’ll meet ‘neath that giant Exxon sign
That brings this fair city light
Man there’s an opera out on the Turnpike
There’s a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops
Cherry Tops
Rips this holy night
The street’s alive
As secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they vanish unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switch-blades
Hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted
Explode into rock’n'roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street
Down in Jungleland
In the parking lot the visionaries
Dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing
To the records that the DJ plays
Lonely-hearted lovers
Struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on
Just one look
And a whisper, and they’re gone
Beneath the city two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender
In a bedroom locked
In whispers of soft refusal
And then surrender
In the tunnels uptown
The Rat’s own dream guns him down
As shots echo down them hallways in the night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light
Outside the street’s on fire
In a real death waltz
Between what’s flesh and what’s fantasy
And the poets down here
Don’t write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night
They reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded
Not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland
Tom Asacker: Do you want to succeed? Then don’t compete.
Tom certainly has a list of things that he is good at but to me he is just a good guy who cares passionately about the he does. We run across a lot of folks these days who act passionately but few, (Pareto’s Law at work), who truly are. I hope you take a moment and read this piece. Simple, brilliant and timeless. Enjoy
This Is Generation Flux: Meet The Pioneers Of The New (And Chaotic) Frontier Of Business
When Fast Company first hit the street I was a huge fan. Some how I have lost interest over the years, not sure why. This piece has me reinvesting my time into FC pieces. It is like reconnecting with an old friend.
What Would Carl Spackler Say?
Happy leap year! This morning in my twitter feed I got one of the suggestions of who to follow. As it turns out the Dalai Lama is quite the twitterer. Seeing that he follows no one but is followed by 3.7 million tweet folks I thought there might be something to learn from this cat. However, the more I thought about the Lama and his tweeting strategies the more Bill Murray came into my head from Caddy Shack. The famous scene when we learn on his deathbed he’ll receive total consciousness might be played out so very differently in 2012. Lines like: Big Twitterer The Lama….Infinity Following…..How might you see it play out? Shout out to the Dalai Lama for arriving in my feed on leap year!
Wisdom vs Intelligence
I have know Tom for a very long time. His book Sandbox Wisdom had a profound effect on me while I read it in Phoenix Arizona. Enjoy this brief, funny and great story.
Tom Peters Speech at Drucker Day 2010
No matter how much time passes I seem to still be drawn to someone who knows what the hell they’re talking about!
